KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS 3558
THE HISTORY OF THE ORDER (IN GENERAL)
Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity.
The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.
The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world’s foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities.
The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Spain.
ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST COUNCIL 3558
Borger Council, No. 3558, Knights of Columbus, was organized August 3, 1952, by charter issued by the Supreme Council.
Ninety-six names were inscribed in the charter; the major degrees were exemplified for approximately one-third on the day of institution, while the remaining two-thirds of the initial membership were transferred from other councils, principally from Frank Keim Council N. 2767 in Pampa. O. L. “Ollie” Bertorelli was elected Grand Knight at the first meeting. One of the first major activities was the sponsorship of a Field Mass, celebrated by Bishop Laurence J. FitzSimon May 7, 1953, in Huber Park. After 24 hours of strong wind and much dust, the weather changed; what appeared to be a disastrous choice of date turned out to be a memorable occasion.
Knights of Columbus Council 3558 has been active, and the Boy Scout Troop 161 sponsored by the Knights was named the best all-around troop in the area.
Since 2002, the Knights have awarded a college scholarship to a graduating Senior each year.
David Myers is currently the 36th Grand Knight. His dad, Max Myers, was also a Grand Knight.
